5 Tips For Perfecting Your Résumé

Reworking your résumé to keep it up to date is not always the most interesting or exciting of tasks. Sometimes, it can even feel super overwhelming and you end up putting it off until the last minute. Don’t you fret. We’re here to give you our key tips!

Our top five tips for perfecting your résumé:

  1. Keep it to one page. Going back ten years is generally a good place to stop.

  2. Organization is key! Make sure it is easy to read and visually appealing. Think about it as your virtual elevator speech—short and to the point.

  3. Make it specific to the job that you’re seeking. Read over the job description for the position you want and make sure to use keywords from the text. Keep in mind, the recruiter might not know what you currently do and job titles can differ from business to business. So, clarification and being specific matters. Include any knowledge of systems, responsibilities, or tasks they reference in the job description.

  4. Proofread, proofread, and—one more time for the person in the back—proofread. Spelling and grammatical errors are a quick way to get that disheartening rejection email. Make sure you take time to review your résumé once you’ve completed it. You can even take it a step further and get another set of eyes on it. Have someone else read over it just to cover all bases.

  5. Lastly, name your résumé something simple. (Ex: First Name, Last Name – Résumé) And be sure to save it as a pdf. You don’t want to send the working, editable document.

That’s it! Your résumé is ready to go.
