How Birmingham Is Supporting It's Local Community

Last month a group of city and business leaders in the Birmingham area met to discuss how our community can prepare for the upcoming months. More than 40 regional leaders worked together to break down the potential problems our city is facing. Their objective was to identify ways we can work together to reduce the negative impact to our local economy.

“We are in this together”, Birmingham!

What came out of that meeting was a new initiative, #BhamStrong. They created solutions and proactive actions our community can take in response to this economic downturn. Our leaders are taking steps and collaborating with businesses so that we are ready to turn things around once social distancing is over. We want to be ready to come out of the gate fast once this subsides.

There were a number of other solutions that were executed quickly in less than a few weeks:

  1. The Birmingham Strong Fund was established. This is an emergency loan for local, small businesses. They raised over two million dollars to provide financial support and was funded by by local leaders and the city council.

  2. A call center was created to handle calls and answer questions about testing for COVID-19.

  3. Local Distancing was launched which created a platform for businesses to buy gift certificates for local restaurants. There are more than 100 businesses featured on their website now.

  4. BHMcares was established so that people can fund meals for healthcare workers and support local restaurants.

We’re so proud to be a part of this business community. Birmingham is a special place. We have a community that is so giving and willing to help others. We are better working together!
